Coast Guard Station on Block Island to close for winter season

U.S. Coast Guard Station Block Island will officially conduct the annual seasonal closure for the summer boating season on Tuesday, September 7th 2010.

During the winter, Block Island closes due to reduced marine traffic and transfers its response capabilities back to the parent command at Station Point Judith, Rhode Island. Point Judith is located 12 nautical miles north of Block Island…

Block Island under Hurricane Warning

As of 2 p.m. Thursday Hurricane Earl's sustained wind speed has decreased to 125 mph and the National Hurricane Center has downgraded it to a category 3 storm. The Spring House is now flying its hurricane warning flags for the first time since Hurricane Bob hit New England nearly 20 years ago. Bob was a category 2 storm, Earl is expected to be a category 2 or strong category 1 storm when it passes to the east of Block Island Friday night.

Hurricane Earl and Block Island

Looks like there's a good chance we'll be seeing some effects of Earl this weekend on Block Island. Earl is expected to pass about 100 miles east of Nantucket, potentially bringing tropical storm conditions to Block Island. Block Island Lifeguard Certification Course

August 9 to August 13, from 8am to 12 pm. Participants must be 15 years old, and must pass a prerequisite swim of 400 meters. American Red Cross certification cards for CPR and lifeguard training will be issued upon completion. CPR and First Aid only class is August 10.
