Starting August 22, 2010 U.S. employers will be able to complete,
sign, scan and store Form I-9 electronically. A new ruling passed
by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also states that
employers must complete Form I-9 within three business (not
calendar) days of the date the employee is hired.
Block Island employers must retain audit trails when Form I-9 is
created, completed, updated or modified, but not each time the form
is viewed. Block Island employers may use paper, electronic systems
or a combination of paper and electronic systems. Further, Island
employers may change electronic storage systems as long as the
systems meet the performance standards set forth in the rule.
